Runway de-icer doesn’t stop working
when the snow melts.

Norwood Memorial averages roughly 126 freezing days a year. Every one of those days, the airport does its job: treated pavement, clear runways, safe operations. Nobody's arguing with that.

Here's what nobody tells you at closing when you buy the airplane. The chemicals that keep that pavement open are formulated for concrete and asphalt, not for aluminum. Your tires pick them up on every taxi, takeoff, and landing, and your prop blast and rotation spray them exactly where you never look: belly skin, gear legs, wheel wells, flap tracks, and the underside of the stabilizer.

Then spring comes, the ramp dries out, and the residue stays. That film attracts moisture out of the air. Damp residue sitting on aluminum, packed into lap joints and around fastener heads, is a corrosion cell running quietly all summer on last winter's chemistry.

Why you don’t see it until it’s expensive

Corrosion doesn't start where you can see it. It starts in the seams, under the belly film, behind the exhaust staining everyone ignores. By the time it's visible from a walk-around, it's usually been working for seasons. And the person who finds it is your A&P at annual, at which point it stops being a cleaning problem and becomes a sheet metal problem. Ask anyone who's paid for a skin repair what they'd give to have caught it at the wash stage.

The FAA's own corrosion guidance, Advisory Circular 43-4B, is blunt about the fix: regular cleaning is a primary corrosion control measure. Not a cosmetic nicety. A maintenance measure.

The Norwood double hit: KOWD sits about 11 miles from tidal salt water. Close enough for the FAA's coastal corrosion guidance to apply, and cold enough for 100-plus freezing days of pavement treatment. Aircraft tied down outside here take both exposures, all year.

What actually fixes it

A recurring belly and gear wash, on an interval, with aviation-spec chemistry. That last part matters: every product Ready Five puts on an aircraft meets Boeing D6-17487 and Airbus AMS specifications, because the wrong cleaner can be as hard on aluminum, seals, and windows as the contamination it's removing.
